THE TENSION OF HESYCHIA 2021

‘Does colour have sound?’

The Tension of Hesychia is a multisensory exploration of the phenomena of light, sound and the spaces in-between.

The Tension of Hesychia is a large scale, multidisciplinary and interactive installation that encourages playfulness and self-guided inquiry through the activation of senses. Inspired by the line of enquiry ‘Does colour have sound?’ the project combines and reuses discarded found and industrial materials such as solar panels, light, sound and amplifiers to explore the phenomena of light and sound. The installation becomes a multisensory encounter that aims to question perceived reality by exploring liminal-liminoid space as a space of exchange, connection and potential transformation.

The work can be installed in multiple different configurations that can be used during the day or at night, which creates different experiences depending upon the site and its arrangement.

YARRA CAVES ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

In 2023 Rani became the first artist in residence at Yarra Caves in Yarra Glen (Victoria, Australia). The residency provided a platform to further develop the work. Specifically configured for The Den Studio space the work was transformed to become an experimental performance that was designed to test how audiences would interact with the work. A new pedal was commissioned for the performance specifically designed to encourage audience participation; a collaboration with Michael Gardner from emmergyfx based out of a studio in the UK.

The performance was a response to the light and sound. The audience was invited to perform with her. As Rani moved through the space and explored the transmission of energy and forces that are often outside of human perception, audiences were asked to consider how they would move through the space and engage with the forces at play.

A curated exhibition of the artist's video work was shown alongside the installation. Ming, a moving image artist and filmmaker, documented the performance and the event.
